Not crazy about this one. Probably didn't put enough SCM and Hanna's Blue Ash on it. This is on Continental mid-fire white stoneware.

The best of the lot. This is on Continental Super White.

This one is also pretty good. Also on Continental Super White.

This one had quite a few pinholes and craters inside and out. It's on Continental Mid-fire White Stoneware I'll probably try to re-fire.

This is what happens to me a lot when using SCM over white stoneware (Continental mid-fire white in this case). The poured Mayco Green Tea was just as bad on these cups. Maybe someday I'll learn my lesson.

SCM Cool and Water Blue

The outside is SCM with Hanna's Blue Ash, Water Color Blue, and Jenn's Juicy Fruit. The inside is Water Blue Revision 1  (from Pottery Making Illustrated July/August 2013). These are Continental Clay Super White.

A couple more experiments

I think these were a little more successful than the last experiments.

SCM Cool sprayed over Coyote Clay Aqua "Celadon" brushed over black underglaze. Mayco Green Tea inside. There was a brushed line of Hanna's Blue Ash under the rim. I'm going to try Burke's Strong Celadon in place of the commercial glaze next time.

Why the pink?

Two mugs. Different firing, but using the same schedule. The dry glazes are from the same batch, but they were mixed (with water) at different times. The mug on the left was sprayed the day after mixing. The mug on the right was sprayed several weeks after mixing.

The glazes are SCM Cool, Hanna's Blue Ash, Water Color Blue, Jenn's Juicy Fruit. Mayco Green Tea Inside and over the lip.

Here's another cup from the firing with a little more of the blue glaze.

Doesn't seem like it was the firing. This vase was sprayed at the same time as the mug on the right, but it was fired at the same time as the mug on the left and it looks like the mug on the right.

Just a plate

Cone 6. Strontium Crystal Magic - Cool with Water Color Blue sponged on and Hannah's Blue Ash and Jen's Juicy Fruit (with iron) sprayed over the top. This is from the same spraying and firing as the previous posts, but it's made out of a red clay.

These are SCM Cool with Hannah's Blue Ash, Water Color Blue, and Jen's Juicy Fruit (with iron) over.

The stoneware bowls fared better than the stoneware mugs with SCM. I only lost one bowl due to bad pitting/cratering.

Strontium Crystal Magic - Cool

Porcelain mugs

Finally got enough pots to do another firing. This time it was cone 6 with "Strontium Crystal Magic - Cool" (unmodified) from the recipes on the Steven Hill DVD. The other glazes are Hannah's Blue Ash, Water Color Blue, and Jen's Juicy Fruit (with iron) sprayed lightly over everything else. The liners are Mayco Oyster and Green Tea.

I used these glazes on two types of stoneware (Mile Hi Ash and Laguna Whitestone) and three types of porcelain (Mile Hi Aspen, Laguna Frost, and "The Coup" from Matt and Dave's Clays). I had really good luck with all the porcelains and fairly poor luck with both types of stoneware (craters and pinholes even though I bisque fired to cone 03). I think I'm done with anything other than porcelain for SCM.

Firing schedule was:
   400/hr to 2070
   100/hr to 2165 hold 1 hr
   9999/hr to 1700
   50/hr to 1600 hold 1 hr
   50/hr to 1500.
Total firing time approx 13 1/2 hrs.

SCM - Cone ~5 3/4

These are using the recipes and firing schedule from the Steven Hill Surface Techniques video (link 1, link 2). I skipped the Silica, which appears to be a typo, in Hanna's Fake Ash. Although they don't look like it to me, these are a little bit underfired. The kiln reached around Cone 5 3/4.

These are on Porcelain (cups) or white stoneware (mug and bowl).

All are SCM - Warm 100 with Bailey Orange Red, Hanna's Blue Ash, Watercolor Blue, and Jen's Juicy Fruit over. I did not use any Silicon Carbide.

I am much less happy with the iron bearing stoneware (Laguna Los Altos blend) this time - everything is brown. I assume it's because I used SCMO rather than SCM, which seemed to work much better on that clay body. I'm very happy with the Mile Hi Ceramics Birch and Dover. Everything on those bodies came out great except for blistering on the Rutile Blue liner glaze on the two big pots..

Reduction Dropoff 5/11/11

Dropped off a bunch of stuff for ^10R. These are all SCMO+0.75%SiC with Spotted Black and Hanna's Fake Ash Over. Most also with Water Color Green.

Sprayed Cone 6 1/2 SCM/SiC

This is Strontium Crystal Magic+1% Silicon Carbide with Jenn's Juicy Fruit, Water Color Green, and Hanna's Fake Ash sprayed over. All but the dark vase are white ^5-7 Ash Stoneware from Mile Hi Ceramics. The vase is a dark brown ^5-7 stoneware (unknown type - a friend gave me a couple dried out mystery bags that I recovered).

Some of these also have pinhole (or tiny crater) problems to a greater or lesser degree like the sponged batch.

This is probably my last Cone 6 testing for a while. I'm switching back to ^8-10 clays for a while...

The blistering/cratering is particularly bad on the right cup in this last photo.

Sponged Cone 6 1/2 SCM/SiC

This is sponge applied Strontium Crystal Magic+1% Silicon Carbide with Jenn's Juicy Fruit, Water Color Green, and Hanna's Fake Ash sponged over. Some of the pots also had a little Spotted Black (yellow in the "before" pics). Like the last batch I "sanded" the glaze with a paper towel when it was still just barely wet. These are all on a brick-red Cone 5-7 clay called Flagstone from Mile Hi Ceramics and were thrown and bisque fired in January 2010. I got pinholes and very small craters on all of these, so I think it's probably better to avoid the SiC at less than Cone 8 unless you're using porcelain.

The liner for the two inside cups is Mayco Cinnabar, the two outside pots are lined with Coyote Clay Saturated Iron.

These are all lined with MC6G Raw Sienna.

I had little bits of a bunch of glazes so I mixed the similar glazes together to use them up in this spraying. I mixed:
Water Color Green and Water Color Green+1.5% Cobalt Oxide.
SCMO+1% Silicon Carbide and SCMO+0.5% SiC.

Sprayed SCM/SiC at Cone 6 1/2

These are SCMO + 0.75% Silicon Carbide sprayed on with Jen's Juicy Fruit, Mayco Cinnabar, Water Color Green and Hanna's Fake Ash sprayed over. The liner (plus a ring around the lip) is MC6G Raw Sienna. All clays are ^5-7 from Mile Hi Ceramics.

In the first image, the left pot is porcelain and the right pot is a dark brown stoneware. The glazes are identical.

More Sponged SCM/SiC at Cone 6 1/2

Glazing is the same as the last post (done at the same time) - SCMO + 1% Silicon Carbide sponged on with Jen's Juicy Fruit and Water Color Green sponged over. There's a little Hanna's Fake Ash brushed on (basically dry-brushed) and the liner (plus a ring around the lip) is MC6G Raw Sienna. After the glaze had dried, I evened it out by "sanding" the glaze with a dry paper towel.

In this first one, the outside pots are a red cone 5-7 clay and the center pot is a ^5-7 porcelain. Glaze looked identical to the previous post before firing.

In this one, the bowls are made of a white cone 5-7 stoneware.
