Why this blog?

I started this blog to have somewhere to keep all my information about spraying glazes together. Since some people seem to be looking at the blog, I'll give you a little info about me.

I am very much an amateur potter. I started playing with clay in December of 2006 because I liked making sculpture. In the fall of 2007, my wife and I took a throwing class together but neither of us was crazy about it and I went back to sculpture. Then, during Raku classes (at Bicentennial Art Center in Aurora, Colorado) in Summer and Fall of 2008, I started throwing again during down time and finally began to enjoy it enough that I bought a wheel in late November of 2008 and played with it quite a bit during December. I went back to sculpture in January and didn't do too much throwing until November of 2009. After the gallery I was showing my sculpture in closed, I decided to try to get better at making pottery and I'm currently trying to throw at least one piece a day on average. Having a two year old made this a bit challenging, but I usually have an hour or so after everyone else has gone to sleep and my wife has been really good about letting me have Sunday afternoons off to take a class at the art center. I have learned a lot from my class (the instructor Shane Porter is really good) and also a lot from watching videos on youtube.

After seeing the work of several people (among others, Tom Coleman, Steven Hill, Chris Lively) who layer glazes using a spray gun, I decided I really wanted to try that so I did a whole bunch of Internet searches and eventually got enough information to get started. My instructor at the art center showed me generally how to spray glazes and what kind of spray gun to get, which helped a lot. My first sprayed kiln load with layered glazes was definitely not what you'd call a success, but it had enough promise and gave me enough clues that my next load came out pretty good. Since then, the pots have gotten better and better.
