More Nuka over Tenmoku

This time I dipped the Tenmoku, sponged some Nuka over, then finished the Nuka with a brush. These are Cone 10 reduction and all are Los Altos Blend clay except "Cups 2", which are Mile Hi Firethorn.

Vase (Tenmoku inside)

Cups 1 (VC AA Taffy inside)

Cups 2 (Nuka inside and porcelain slip around the base)

Bowls (Nuka inside the left, VC AA Taffy inside the right)

Nuka over Tenmoku

Here's the best of my first batch of Nuka glaze over Tenmoku glaze. The Tenmoku was dipped, the Nuka was brushed.

Next time I'll be adding a little more Nuka.

Results - Reduction Dropoff 5/11/11

Not too bad. You can see the "before" pics here:
I am much less happy with the iron bearing stoneware (Laguna Los Altos blend) this time - everything is brown. I assume it's because I used SCMO rather than SCM, which seemed to work much better on that clay body. I'm very happy with the Mile Hi Ceramics Birch and Dover. Everything on those bodies came out great except for blistering on the Rutile Blue liner glaze on the two big pots..

Reduction Dropoff 5/11/11

Dropped off a bunch of stuff for ^10R. These are all SCMO+0.75%SiC with Spotted Black and Hanna's Fake Ash Over. Most also with Water Color Green.

Sprayed Cone 6 1/2 SCM/SiC

This is Strontium Crystal Magic+1% Silicon Carbide with Jenn's Juicy Fruit, Water Color Green, and Hanna's Fake Ash sprayed over. All but the dark vase are white ^5-7 Ash Stoneware from Mile Hi Ceramics. The vase is a dark brown ^5-7 stoneware (unknown type - a friend gave me a couple dried out mystery bags that I recovered).

Some of these also have pinhole (or tiny crater) problems to a greater or lesser degree like the sponged batch.

This is probably my last Cone 6 testing for a while. I'm switching back to ^8-10 clays for a while...

The blistering/cratering is particularly bad on the right cup in this last photo.

Sponged Cone 6 1/2 SCM/SiC

This is sponge applied Strontium Crystal Magic+1% Silicon Carbide with Jenn's Juicy Fruit, Water Color Green, and Hanna's Fake Ash sponged over. Some of the pots also had a little Spotted Black (yellow in the "before" pics). Like the last batch I "sanded" the glaze with a paper towel when it was still just barely wet. These are all on a brick-red Cone 5-7 clay called Flagstone from Mile Hi Ceramics and were thrown and bisque fired in January 2010. I got pinholes and very small craters on all of these, so I think it's probably better to avoid the SiC at less than Cone 8 unless you're using porcelain.

The liner for the two inside cups is Mayco Cinnabar, the two outside pots are lined with Coyote Clay Saturated Iron.

These are all lined with MC6G Raw Sienna.

Re-firing Shino

I had some blistering on a couple of my saggar Shino pots so I decided to re-fire them to Cone 06 in oxidation using a low fire glaze to cover the blisters.
The pots in the center are the re-fired pots and those on the outside are pots that were fired at the same time, but not re-fired.

As you can see, the iron really got activated in the oxidation re-firing, but the pots didn't lose all the carbon trapping.

The amber colored glaze at the bottom of the mug and on the back of the cup is the low fire (commercial) glaze intended to fill in the craters left after I ground off the blisters. Next time I'll grind a little better...

Results of the 2/14 drop-off

See this post for glaze details and "before" pics.

Pitchers - The left one is SCM with 1% SiC, Hanna's Fake Ash and mixed Water Color Green over.Coleman Tea Dust inside. The right one is mixed SCMO, Spotted Black, Hanna's Fake Ash, and mixed Water Color Green.

Pitcher has mixed SCMO, Spotted Black, and Hanna's Fake Ash. The "cookie jar" is SCM with 1% SiC, Hanna's Fake Ash and mixed Water Color Green over. Coleman Tea Dust inside.

The left pot has SCMO+0.5%SiC, Jen's Juicy Fruit, Hanna's Fake Ash and mixed Water Color Green over. The other is SCM with 1% SiC, Hanna's Fake Ash and mixed Water Color Green over.

Kipper the Dog

Here's one I made for my 3 year old and threw in the bisque firing.

Dropped off for ^10 Reduction 2/14

I had little bits of a bunch of glazes so I mixed the similar glazes together to use them up in this spraying. I mixed:
Water Color Green and Water Color Green+1.5% Cobalt Oxide.
SCMO+1% Silicon Carbide and SCMO+0.5% SiC.

Sprayed SCM/SiC at Cone 6 1/2

These are SCMO + 0.75% Silicon Carbide sprayed on with Jen's Juicy Fruit, Mayco Cinnabar, Water Color Green and Hanna's Fake Ash sprayed over. The liner (plus a ring around the lip) is MC6G Raw Sienna. All clays are ^5-7 from Mile Hi Ceramics.

In the first image, the left pot is porcelain and the right pot is a dark brown stoneware. The glazes are identical.

One more saggar Shino

Malcolm Davis Shino saggar fired to Cone 6 1/2 in an electric kiln. I put two pieces of charcoal cut in half and about 1/3 cup of wood chips in the saggar this time. The glaze was brushed on the outside and the liner is MC6G Raw Sienna. I spattered some wax on the outside of the pot this time. I definitely need more experimentation with this as I'd like to get a result in between the last firing and this one.

More Sponged SCM/SiC at Cone 6 1/2

Glazing is the same as the last post (done at the same time) - SCMO + 1% Silicon Carbide sponged on with Jen's Juicy Fruit and Water Color Green sponged over. There's a little Hanna's Fake Ash brushed on (basically dry-brushed) and the liner (plus a ring around the lip) is MC6G Raw Sienna. After the glaze had dried, I evened it out by "sanding" the glaze with a dry paper towel.

In this first one, the outside pots are a red cone 5-7 clay and the center pot is a ^5-7 porcelain. Glaze looked identical to the previous post before firing.

In this one, the bowls are made of a white cone 5-7 stoneware.

Sponged SCM/SiC at Cone 6 1/2

This is SCMO + 1% Silicon Carbide sponged on with Jen's Juicy Fruit and Water Color Green sponged over. There's a little Hanna's Fake Ash brushed on (basically dry-brushed) and the liner (plus a ring around the lip) is MC6G Raw Sienna. The clay is a very dark brown Cone 5-7 stoneware.

After the glaze had dried, I evened it out by "sanding" the glaze with a dry paper towel. The intent was to get rid of the really strong splotches I had with previous sponge tests. Although the picture isn't great, the glaze looks really good to me in person. It reminds me of stone that was worked a really long time ago.

Firing notes: I increased my Cone 6 firing by 20 degrees (2160) and did a 500 degree cool to 1900 followed by a 125 degree cool all the way down to 1400 (basically the MC6G cool-down).

Silicon Carbide and SCM at Cone 6

SCM (with Iron) plus 0.75% SiC, Jen's Juicy Fruit, Mayco Cinnabar (the red blush), and Water Color Green + 1.5% Cobalt Oxide. Hanna's Fake Ash sprayed a little and a ring around the top (which did not drip at all at Cone 6). The liner for this one is Amaco Smoked Sienna. The clay is Mile Hi Aspen Porcelain.

More images from this firing to come. I still definitely got a reduction look at Cone 6, but not nearly as interesting crystals as at cone 8. I have plenty more cone 6 pots for another round of testing (already glazed).

I lowered the temp of my ^8 firing schedule by 80 degrees (peak at 2140), still used an hour hold, and used a fairly slow (-200 degrees/hr) cool down to 1800. The 6 cone was perfectly dropped and the 7 cone was barely bent. For the next firing, I'll be dropping by -150/hr down to 1600 since I'm going to be using one of the MC6G glazes as a liner.

Update 2/9 - a couple of tumblers from the same firing with basically the same glaze...

Silicon Carbide and Strontium Crystal Magic

Here's some more tests with Silicon Carbide and Strontium Crystal Magic.

SCM (with Iron) plus 0.75% SiC, Hanna's Fake Ash, and Spotted Black. The two larger mugs also have Coyote Shino and Jen's Juicy Fruit. Everything came out really well except the Juicy Fruit seems to have left craters where it was thick. It did run really nicely. The pitcher is (Laguna Babu) Porcelain, the shots are a white stoneware (Mile Hi Birch), and the mugs are a dark brown stoneware (Mile Hi Firethorn)

SCM plus 1% SiC, Hanna's Fake Ash, and Water Color Green plus 1% Cobalt. For some reason, the camera turned dark green into dark yucky brown on the two outside pots. The cups are Mile Hi Cedar, the mugs are Firethorn.

SCM plus 1 % SiC, Hanna's Fake Ash, Coyote Shino, and Jen's Juicy Fruit (without Iron) on Firethorn.

Another test with sponge applied glaze on Firethorn. SCM plus 1% SiC, Hanna's Fake Ash, and Water Color Green plus 1% Cobalt. Once again, the camera decided to turn dark green into a yucky dark brown.
